France 24 awarded at the Rory Peck Awards 2023 for the report “Madagascar, kids for sale”

Produced by: Gaëlle Borgia with Jeremy Martin, Jedida Andriamasy and Caroline Brenière

Duration: 5 min

« Madagascar, kids for sale » produced by Gaëlle Borgia and featured on France 24's "Focus" program in March 2023, has received recognition at the 28th Rory Peck Awards 2023 in the "News Award" category. The announcement of the winners took place for the first time at the BAFTA awards (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) in London on November 15th.

In this impactful report, Gaëlle Borgia, who has been a correspondent in Madagascar for France 24 since 2011, leads a team into the famine-stricken villages of the island. This exploration follows the devastating Cyclone Freddy, which hit just weeks prior, compounding the challenges faced by the nation after the destruction caused by the Batsirai and Emnati cyclones the previous year. With farmland and infrastructure destroyed in the southeast, hundreds of thousands of people are now facing famine. Gaëlle Borgia interviews families who, in the struggle for survival, have been compelled to abandon or sell their children. Despite the Malagasy government's denial of child sales since January, the France 24 team presents exclusive testimonies from affected families.

Gaëlle Borgia, known for her extensive work on TV reports and features for international media such as France 24, Arte, and TV5Monde, received a Pulitzer Prize in 2020 for her reporting on Wagner's interference in the presidential election in Madagascar. Additionally, she was honoured with a One World Media award in 2022 for her report, "Eating Shoes – Surviving Madagascar’s Famine" produced for AFP.

«Madagascar, kids for sale», a « Focus » is available for viewing on social media, France 24’s YouTube channel and france24.com
