Elected in October 2022, Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva will be inaugurated on Sunday 1 January 2023 and faces a significant challenge: to unite a shattered Brazilian society.
Genie Godula has been meeting those who make Brazil, from São Paulo to Rio and from pro-Bolsonaro supporters to Lula defenders. Inside the Americas went to meet Frederico d’Avila, MP and defensor of the agricultural lobby and Silas Malafaia, a powerful evangelical priest – both very close to Jair Bolsonaro. In the favelas of São Paulo, Genie Godula talks to Ester Carro, an architect who wishes Lula will bring hope again to the poor. Gregório Duvivier, comedian and journalist is hopeful as well that Lula will appease Brazilian society.
