China : youth under lockdown

Saturday 11 February at 9:10 pm*

At the end of November 2022, several thousand young Chinese took to the streets to protest the country’s strict "Zero Covid" strategy. From Shanghai to Beijing, angry slogans against this heavy-handed policy and the communist government resonate within a whole generation. This movement, spontaneous and leaderless, is a situation little seen in China since the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The demonstrations were immediately suppressed, but the discontent now goes further than the harsh health measures, which have since been lifted. In a country where censorship prevails, France 24's Shanghai correspondents Lou Kisiela and Antoine Morel explore the causes of this anger, which for some people goes as far as wanting to flee China.

“China, youth under lockdown?” a Reporters broadcast on France 24’s four channels (in English, French Arabic and Spanish), and available on france24.com
