“Truth or Fake 2022: Debunking fake news with high-school students”

Report format: 12 minutes - Presented by: Derek Thomson (English), Maëva Poulet (French), Fatma Ben Hamad (Arabic) and Natalia Ruiz Giraldo (Spanish)

For the French Press and Media in Schools Week 2022, France 24’s Observers, a team of journalists specialised in debunking misinformation, are back with a new show disentangling fact from fiction. This long-format episode is available in four languages (French, English, Arabic and Spanish) all week on France 24’s channels and digital platforms.

The Observers team has produced annual editions of “Truth or Fake” since 2015. For the 2022 edition, in partnership with France’s media-education body CLEMI (Education Centre for Media and Information), the Observers team spent time with 10th-grade students at the Paul Valéry high school in Paris, teaching them techniques to debunk fake news and propaganda. In the course of five sessions, the students put fact-checking theory into practice using examples of misinformation they had identified themselves.

The students also produced an episode of France 24’s weekly fact-checking video module, presenting and filming the module themselves. The Observer team’s fact-checking work is also featured in on-air segments on France 24 weekdays at 8:45pm and 10:20pm Paris time, presented by James Creedon and Anthony Saint-Léger.

France Medias Monde’s channels (RFI, France 24 and Monte Carlo Doualiya) are dedicated to providing news that is based         on facts broadcast all around the world in French and 19 other languages. Thanks to France 24’s Observers, the channels also         have long-standing expertise in the fight against false information and are mobilised all year long to offer shows that allow               viewers and listeners to identify and deconstruct all forms of information manipulation.
France Medias Monde’s network of fact-checking journalists work to share this mission on a variety of formats (tv, radio and digital) and on major themes (Africa, Europe, education, youth, politics, international information...). This internal organisation focused on the fight against disinformation ensures consistency and complementarity of our offerings and allows the group to actively contribute to national and international  initiatives that mobilise major media outlets together.

France Medias Monde participates in "Vrai ou Fake", a platform on the franceinfo website that brings together various programmes in the French public broadcasting system. The group is also an active member of the International Fact-Checking Network, and in early 2022, joined the media coalition "Objéctif désinfox", led by AFP and Google to fight against disinformation during the French presidential election.
