Presented by Annette Young

Format: 12 minutes

In the lead-up to the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, taking place in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, The 51% will present a special edition spotlighting the women whose livelihoods are connected to the sea, whether as sailors, explorers, or members of the merchant navy.

In a world long dominated by men, there is now a wave of talented women who are turning the tide. France 24’s Annette Young meets Justine Mettraux, the Swiss professional sailor who broke the record as the fastest woman ever in this year’s Vendée Globe, the iconic solo round-the-world race. She also speaks with the Brazilian adventurer Tamara Klink, who, at just 28 years old, recounts how she survived solitude when living alone on her boat amidst the icebergs of Greenland. The special edition also takes audience aboard with women serving in the French merchant navy, offering rare insight into their daily lives at sea.
