In Syria, Yarmouk camp is a symbol of Palestinian memory in exile and resistance to dictatorship. Often referred to as 'Little Palestine', Yarmouk is located less than 10 kilometers from central Damascus. After years of wars and devastation, it is now beginning to rise from its ashes.
Established in 1957 to welcome Palestinian refugees, Yarmouk evolved over the decades into a city of its own, with over 160,000 residents in 2011. But the war in Syria turned the camp into a battlefield, marked by fighting, siege, famine, and relentless bombings, until it was recaptured by the Syrian regime in 2018.
Today, some of its former residents are beginning to return. For France 24, journalists Claire Billet and Olivier Jobard met one such family: Ahmed and Jihane Tameem, who fled to Sweden over a decade ago and are now back with their three children to revisit the places of their past. They are met with a landscape still scarred by war, but also their loved ones, who still hope they can rebuild their lives where everything once came to a halt.
'Yarmouk Revisited', a report broadcast on France 24's four channels (in English, French, Arabic, and Spanish), YouTube, france24.com, and social media platforms.
